Who’s who at Blink
Understanding the different roles in eye care
When you walk through the doors at Blink, Bridge of Allan, you’re greeted by a dedicated team of experts. Every role in our practice plays a vital part in protecting your eye health and making sure you walk out looking and feeling fantastic. Here is a quick guide to who’s who behind the scenes…
The Optometrist (BSc) – Your Eye Test & Health Specialist
Think of your optometrist as your eye doctor.
What the credentials mean:
BSc stands for Bachelor of Science. This means your optometrist has completed a multi-year UK university degree in optometry, followed by rigorous clinical training and professional examinations to be registered with the General Optical Council (GOC).
What they do:
Our optometrists - Laura, Heather, and Zahira - are responsible for the clinical health of your eyes. During your exam, they will:
Check your visual acuity and fine-tune your prescription for glasses or contact lenses.
Screen for common eye conditions like glaucoma, cataracts, macular degeneration, and diabetic retinopathy.
Use our advanced scanning technology (like 3D OCT imaging and Optos retinal imaging) to examine the deep layers of your retina.
Prescribe specialised treatments or refer you to an ophthalmologist (NHS or private) if further medical care is needed.
Heather has now passed her Independent Prescribing exams meaning she can now manage, treat and directly prescribe medications for complex eye conditions, right here in the Blink practice, helping you get specialist care faster without the need for a hospital referral.
The Dispensing Optician (FBDO) - Your Frame & Lens Expert
Once your eye exam is complete, you’ll step into the hands of our dispensing team to bring your prescription to life.
What the credentials mean:
FBDO stands for Fellow of the Association of British Dispensing Opticians. It is the recognised UK qualification awarded to optical professionals who have completed a specialist diploma or degree in ophthalmic dispensing, optics, and frame fitting.
What they do:
Our fully qualified dispensing opticians, Mandy and Gillian, are your style and vision architects. They:
Translate your optometrist’s prescription into the precise lens design for your lifestyle (varifocals, high-index thin lenses, sports tints, or anti-glare coatings).
Ensure your chosen frames sit comfortably, taking precise millimetric measurements so your lenses line up perfectly with your pupils.
Adjust, repair, and fine-tune your specs whenever they need a little refresh.
The Other Key Roles You’ll Meet at Blink
It takes more than eye tests and frame styling to deliver the full Blink experience! Here are the other vital roles that keep our practice running smoothly:
Reception / Practice Support Team
Your first point of contact! Our reception and practice support team welcome you with a warm smile. They handle your bookings, guide you through pre-screening tests before your exam, help you browse frames, and answer any general queries about your visit.
The Ophthalmologist (External Specialist)
While not based in our day-to-day practice, an ophthalmologist is a medical doctor who specialises in surgical and complex medical eye care. If Laura, Heather, or Zahira spot something during your test that needs specialist hospital care or surgery (like cataract removal), they will refer you directly to an ophthalmologist.
👓 Vision and Style ✨ - the Blink promise
Clear vision, the perfect fit, and frames you’ll love - that’s the Blink promise. By combining clinical precision with expert styling, our entire team works together to ensure your eyes get the highest standard of care from start to finish.
